Orthoptists should be very proud as we had finalists in 2 categories, Paddy McCance and David Wright in the advancing practice award and Erin Wilson in the rising star award. Erin works at Warrington Hospital and was nominated for her advancing quality project in highlighting and identifying visual problems in patients at risk of falling. Erin was a worthy winner, along with 5 other professionals all in their first 5 years of qualification who are making their mark as future stars. Paddy and David, from the Western Health and Social Care Trust, were shortlisted to the final 3 in a very tough category for their work in reducing the negative impact of visual impairment post stroke.
It was a fantastic day showcasing innovation, quality and outcomes for patients by AHP’s and HCS but what struck me was that we are not very good at celebrating our successes and work. We consider things we do as ‘normal’ but yet every one of us could have submitted something in every category and been shortlisted. Our ‘normal’ is someone else’s idea of innovation or public health initiative, our outcomes make a difference to the quality of someone’s life– we need to shout about it at every opportunity.
