The programme for Optometry Tomorrow, the College of Optometrists’ annual two-day conference has been announced. The conference, taking place from 18-19 March 2018, will include a keynote speech by Dr. Andrew Bastawrous, an eye surgeon, inventor, 2014 TED fellow and CEO of Peek Vision.
Dr. Bastawrous, who is increasing access to eye care worldwide through his company’s innovative smartphone-based ophthalmoscope and multiple vision tests apps, will deliver his speech entitled, ‘Using public health principles, smartphone technology and innovative financing to radically increase access to eye care’. Speaking about his keynote, he said; “It’s great to be given the opportunity to speak at the UK’s leading clinical optometry event. As an ophthalmologist, I’ve witnessed unhelpful divides between the ophthalmic and optometric community, in many places these divides lead to people not having access to life changing services. I know how important the role of the optometry sector is and that together we can provide much needed access to millions who don’t have it.”
The conference will take place at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole Hotel and will offer cutting-edge lectures, seminars, peer discussion and hands-on clinical and discussion workshops. Speakers include Kam Balaggan, who will present on VMT macular holes and is returning to the conference due to popular demand. Professor James Wolffsohn will be presenting on the DEWS II report, Dr Nicola Logan will lecture on myopia control and Dr Pearse Keane will be leading a seminar on binocular OCT.
