Vision UK thematic awards, Astbury Award 2019 and David Burt OBE Award 2019 shortlist

Vision UK, the umbrella organisation which leads collaboration with partners across the eye health and sight loss sector have shortlisted the nominations for four new thematic Awards and new David Burt OBE Award as well as the Astbury Award. The winners will be announced at the joint Vision UK and Royal Society of Medicine (RSM) GP with Primary Health Care Section ‘Forward View: vison and eye health’ conference on 9 October 2019. Astbury Award for Excellence in Collaboration 2019

The Astbury Award recognises excellence in collaboration within the eye health and sight loss sector and is named for former VISION 2020 UK Chair and inaugural recipient Nick Astbury.

Thematic awards

Vision UK’s new thematic awards are in recognition of work that is centred around their four strategic priorities:

  • Evidence and statistics
  • Public perception of sight loss
  • Research, cures and treatments
  • Services, support and care

David Burt OBE Award 2019

Vision UK with the RSM GP with Primary Healthcare section, present the new David Burt OBE Award by David Burt, past Chairman of the General Optical Council to an individual or team working within the vision, eye health  and sight loss community  who can demonstrate  a project, in research or improved methodology and practice in assisting in the cause of reducing sight loss in the community, that has made a significant improvement in the sector.

Nominations are taken from Vision member organisations. However nominees do not necessarily have to work in, or be trustees or volunteers of the organisation. Nominations are assessed according to impact/outcome by an independent and impartial panel of judges:

  • Parul Desai, Chair Clinical Council for Eye Health Commissioning for SAFE: Systems and Assurance Framework for Eye health
  • Professor Jugnoo Rahi et al for Systematic Evidence Reviews that have directly shaped/underpinned the Major Policy review of the UK Public England’s National Screening Committee’s Programme on Childhood Vision Screening (2015), development of the Programme Standards and Pathways (2017) and second Major Policy review (2019)
